FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INDIANA HEALTH CENTER AT SOUTH BEND TO HOLD OPEN HOUSE, AUGUST 10

Health testing and giveaways will commemorate
National Health Center Week in South Bend

SOUTH BEND, IN (August3, 2011) – In observance of National Community Health Center Week, Indiana Health Center at South Bend (IHC at South Bend) will host an Open House and Mini Health Fair, Wednesday, August 10, from 9 a.m. to noon, at 1901 Western Avenue, #B. The public is welcome.

During the event, IHC at South Bend will be providing an array of free health tests and screenings – including tests for cholesterol (lipid panels) and blood lead levels, tuberculosis, diabetes (HbA1C), Body Mass Index (BMI) in addition to nutrition counseling. Again this year, the health center has organized a variety of agencies and resources to provide an opportunity for area residents to receive free health screenings. McKesson Medical-Surgical, a leading distributor of medical supplies and equipment, is proud to support Indiana Health Centers and National Community Health Center Week. “We are thrilled that all attendees will have an opportunity to view their baseline health profile,” said Joan Eliasek, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Supplier Management at McKesson Medical-Surgical. “Together we can help to make sure the medically underserved can have high-quality, affordable healthcare at their local health centers,” Joan added.

These screenings and tests underscore Indiana Health Center at South Bend’s important role in providing high quality, accessible and affordable health care to medically vulnerable and underserved families and individuals in South Bend, including the homeless.

In addition, this year, the staff is providing tours of the newly renovated facility. In 2009 a “shovel ready” grant under the Recovery Act was received to renovate the practice and to expand the electronic health system already in place. The staff will be on hand to enroll new health center clients and to introduce the newly added and long-term health care providers.

National Community Health Center Week, August 7-13, is dedicated to recognizing the services and contributions of community health centers which provide access for those who are uninsured, under-insured, and unemployed. Nationwide, community health centers provide primary medical and dental services for more than 20 million people, including farm workers and the homeless, bringing care to 1 in 5 low-income, uninsured adults and children in America, and 1 in 9 Medicaid beneficiaries. Federally qualified health centers save billions of tax dollars each year by providing continuous primary medical services, prenatal care, immunizations, and chronic disease management.

“We want to assure access to primary care to all who need it. We have evening and Saturday hours and a sliding fee scale for those at or below 200 percent of the current poverty level income,” said David Chapman, Practice Manager. “This Open House gives us a chance to thank
the community and demonstrate what we do, 52 weeks a year, for the community,”
Chapman added. We are also taking this opportunity to introduce our new providers and demonstrate what we do for our patients and families 52 weeks a year,” he concluded.

IHC at South Bend is part of Indiana Health Centers. Inc. (IHC), a statewide network of Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC), serving more than 42,000 patients at six major clinic locations. (www.IndianaHealthOnline.org) Opening in 1979, as a migrant health center, this area FQHC now serves over 11,000 individual persons annually, including newborns, children, teens, adults, and elders. Dr. McManmon, Family Practice and Ivelisse Campos Family Nurse Practitioner have recently joined the staff, which includes Drs. Ziya and Sybil Toper pediatrics, Drs. Agrawal and Chang, pediatrics, Dr. Lim, Family Practice, and Carol Sikorski and Michele Hurst Nurse Practitioners. The Michiana OB/GYN group provides prenatal services at the facility one day each week. IHC@SB also serves as a Public Medicaid Enrollment site, serving as a pilot for this program as early as 1994.

This year, Indiana Health Centers, Inc. celebrates 35 years of providing a health care home to all Hoosiers, regardless of their ability to pay. With the growing economic and health care needs across the state, IHC continues to identify more opportunities for seamless service delivery between and among our critical combination of services for vulnerable populations,” said Lynn Clothier, CEO.
